Teeth cleaning for a dog is a little more complicated than a human dental appointment. They have to sedate the dog, which means no food or drink beforehand. There can also be an increased risk for the dog.
I dropped Jasmine off at the vet at 7:45 am and waited to hear back from the vet. I go the call at 4:30 that she was waking up and I was able to pick her up at 5 pm. The vet handling surgery that day— because of the anesthesia, doggy dental cleanings count as surgeries— looks at the list of surgeries for the day, once all the animals have arrived, and then arranges their schedule accordingly. They like to get the simple and routine surgeries done first and save the more complicated ones for later in the day. They don’t know how difficult a dental cleaning will be until after the dog is sedated, when they can look at X-rays and such.
All of that means that I spent most of Monday feeling mildly worried about Jasmine. I knew she was in good hands, and I knew I wouldn’t hear back until the afternoon. But the later it got, the more worried I got. If I hadn’t had trust in the veterinarian, or if I hadn’t known that Jasmine’s procedure would be later in the day, I would have been very stressed out. In the end, I got my dog home safely, and cuddled with her all evening, for my comfort as much as hers.
My faith life is very similar, now that I think about it. I trust Jesus, who died for my sins, and I have faith that God has a plan for my life. From reading the Bible and listening to gifted pastors, I know that God is in control, and His perfect timing will bring His plans to fruition at just the right time. I might be a little worried about how things will work out, but I still know that He will take care of me, no matter what.
If I didn’t have that foundation of faith, I’d be like a pet owner, worrying about her dog with no idea when she might hear back from the vet. Just imagining that stresses me out.
Psalm 41:3 says, “He nurses them when they are sick and soothes their pains and worries.”
I have spent the past two days taking care of Jasmine— making her soft food, giving her cuddles, and taking her back to the vet for nausea medication when she wasn’t able to eat or drink.
That’s what God wants to do for me. All I have to do is let him.
~susan~

Every traffic light I came to turned red— or so it seemed anyway. I started to get frustrated, but then I had a thought. This was God’s way of forcing me to slow down. If I’d hit all those lights green, I would have kept going faster, and getting a little more reckless with every intersection I went through.

Instead, I had time to think at every intersection I stopped at. And I reminded myself that the church will still be there, and the people there will either wait for me or start without me. And either way, things will go as God intends.

The past week or two I’ve found myself feeling very cranky. I’m not finding joy in life like I usually do. I have just finished a very busy time at work, and it feels like I’ve been working non-stop for weeks. Now I’m having to readjust my schedule to something more balanced. It should feel like a relief, but sometimes, I find it stressful. Some part of me keeps wondering what I’m forgetting to do. There is an adrenalin boost when I’m working under a deadline, and it’s so satisfying when I finish up the last of a big project. I get a big feeling of accomplishment.

But after that, there’s a bit of a let-down. So maybe that’s what I’m experiencing right now. I’ve gone from doing all the things all at once, to not wanting to do anything at all. Neither one is a healthy way to live. So I am now focusing on finding balance in the things I do.

One thing I haven’t been doing well at is the daily Bible readings. I know there’s a lot to be learned from that, but I just haven’t found the motivation. Which also means I haven’t been praying like I should, or I would feel motivated. And it’s hard to start again when I am behind. The guilt nags at me, and I want to ignore it—by also ignoring my Bible and prayer time. But Pastor Jenny has given us good advice. “If you are behind,” she reminds us, “Don’t try to catch up. Just start with today’s reading and go from there.”

I have read part of today’s Bible reading. But I also picked up my Bible and asked the Lord to give me a verse to combat my crabbiness. I let it fall open, closed my eyes, and pointed at a random verse: Isaiah 41:18 “I will open rivers on the bare heights, And springs in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, And the dry land fountains of water.” (NAS)

That is a verse taken out of context, but the words resonated with me. God will bring water to the dry and barren lands, and He will also bring back the joy and enthusiasm I am craving. All I have to do is open my heart, open my Bible, and pray.

~susan~

Which made me think about what it must have been like to be with the Israelites, escaping from Egypt.
The Bible talks about Moses’ perspective and a little about the Pharaoh's thoughts on the matter. But what would it have been like for the average Israelite?
Egypt was a pretty scary place to live in in those days, what with the plagues and the locusts and and all. Did they even know it was God sending the plagues? I suppose that would be a strong incentive for leaving Egypt. And so they packed up and headed out—in the middle of the night in case Pharaoh changed his mind, again.
And then they got to the Red Sea, they were being pursued by the Pharaoh's armies. The was this sea in front of them, and nobody had a boat.
They probably thought they were done for. But then God spoke to Moses, and then suddenly the waters parted. All they had to do was walk across. If I was there, I’d be looking around nervously and trying to get the person in front of me to hurry up!
Sometimes, God works in slow, subtle ways in our lives. That is mostly how it works for me. I go through a very difficult time, and I feel like I am barely making it. When I get through it, I look back and see how God was using that situation to help me grow.
I tend to over-think things and I stress out, and my mind makes a list of everything that could possibly go wrong. And then I panic and I get angry, and I start blaming everyone and myself. When I get all freaked out, I keep wanting to push and solve the problem. That’s when I have to make myself take a step back. I take a walk, or I wash some dishes. Sometimes, not often enough, I remember to pray. And that gives me time to calm down and approach the problem calmly. Usually, I can find a solution. Or I remember that I can ask for help. When I’m really on a roll, I ask God for help. Because God is powerful enough to do amazing things, if I let Him.
Like it says in Exodus 14:14, “You will not have to do anything but stay calm. The Lord will do the fighting for you.”

~susan~

Other events may be added, as we continue planning.
1. Trunk-or-Treat
If you'd like to assist with the Trunk-or-Treat at Willamette Christian Center, you are welcome to do so. Volunteers and candy donations are always needed. This is a great way to provide a safe place for families to go on Halloween as well as partner with other area churches. Here is he link
https://willamettechristian.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/615/responses/new

Meal Boxes
The need for Thanksgiving meal boxes is expected to be greater at Adams Elementary. We will plan to collect offerings toward this and will give these to Adams Elementary families the week of Thanksgiving, on Tuesday, Nov 21 from 3-6 pm. You can designate your gift by writing "meal boxes" on your check or envelope, and this is an option within our Online Giving.

Thanksgiving Dinner:
Through much prayer and discernment, we have decided we will not hold our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner this year in the same way we have done in the past. We are currently looking at ways for people to volunteer from our congregation with a different community resource if they choose to do so, and looking at ministries we can support throughout the year for the unhoused instead.
Note: There are tentative plans to hold a church potluck dinner at the church on Thanksgiving Day for those who don't have other plans. Stay tuned for more details on that. We don't want anyone to be alone on the holiday.

Giving Tree and Living Water:
We will be doing the Giving Tree again this year. We will be partnering with Adams Elementary to meet the specific needs of some families at the school. This is yet another way we can have a lasting relational impact on the Adams community. Tags will be available in early December. We will also be giving toward Living Water International.

Live Nativity:
We will be doing Live Nativity again this year for two days, Saturday, Dec 16, and Sunday, Dec 17, partnering again with Springfield Church of God. Some of the scenes will be updated structurally and there will be work days both in November and December to fully prepare for it. We will also need help with other things: Costumes, Makeup, Actors, Kitchen, and Hospitality. It would be one way to know who was missing, so we can check on them.
But the real point is, big things are made up of little things. So we shouldn’t be discouraged when all we can do are little things. God can put all those little things together, and turn them into a miracle.
Matthew 17:20 says, “It was because you do not have enough faith,” answered Jesus. “I assure you that if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, ‘Go from here to there!’ and it will go. You could do anything!” (GNT)
Let’s strive to have just a little bit of faith. God can work with that.

~susan~

We do this once a month, usually on the first Sunday. This is one of the most important traditions in the Church of God. Sometimes it’s easy to just eat the cracker, and swallow the juice, and go on with the rest of the service.
But it’s not a mindless tradition— at least, not when it’s done as intended. It’s a time of quiet reflection. We should take a few moments, and just really think about the sacrifice that Jesus made for us.
The bread and wine— or wafers and grape juice—are symbolic, but they are symbols of Jesus sacrificing his life and his blood for us. That’s the most important part of our faith. So it’s important that we remember that.
It was not a simple or easy sacrifice for Jesus to make. We can only imagine what he went through. And the physical pain was the least of it. The worst part was the moment when God turned away from Jesus. That is something none of us will ever have to experience. Thanks to Jesus, we live our entire lives with God watching over us in love.
It’s also a time to think about sins in our lives, and to seek forgiveness for wrongs we’ve done. When we take communion, we are meant to do so with a clean conscience and a pure heart. 1 Corinthians 11:28 says, “With this in mind, individuals must determine whether what they are doing is proper when they eat the bread and drink from the cup.” (GW)
It’s a serious moment, but it’s also a joyful moment. Because Communion is also a reminder that our sins have been forgiven. There is no better good news than that.

Events Highlights

Small Group: Weekly on Wednesdays at 10 am: At the Church Library. I had set the pot outside in a larger planter all summer, so it could get better light. When I picked up the small pot, the roots had grown through the drain holes and into the potting soil in the larger planter. I guess it really enjoyed the sunshine.
I’d like to focus on gratitude this week. I know it’s traditionally celebrated in November, but any day is a good day to be grateful. We, especially here in the U.S., live our lives surrounded by blessings.
Even the fact that I just bit the inside of my cheek—twice— is a reminder to be grateful for the dental care I have received, that allows me to have those nice strong teeth that are making my cheek feel really bad. I’m also grateful for the insurance I have, and the job that provides that insurance. And, although I do not enjoy visiting the dentist, I am glad to have the dentist I go to. Their office treats the issues that need treating without pushing me to get cosmetic procedures that aren’t necessary.
I am thankful for my dogs that give me a reason to get out and walk. I get a little exercise, breathe fresh air and sometimes see the sun. Sure, they sometimes interrupt me when I’m trying to get things done, but to be honest, it’s usually when I need to take a break anyway.
I am grateful for my freezer, fridge, and cupboard full of food. Sometimes I don’t know how to put any of it together to make a meal, but I have more than enough to eat. This week, we got to hear Dan N. share a message on Romans chapters 5 & 12. The video isn’t available to post online yet, but I will get it uploaded as soon as possible, for anyone who missed seeing it in person. It is always interesting to hear a different perspective, even on a text we’ve heard about multiple times. So, we thank Dan for sharing his gifts with us this Sunday. I know I learned something new
Another gift is prayer. I lost my glasses on Saturday— new prescription bifocals with the line-free lenses. I’d only had them for a couple of weeks, and they fell out of my backpack when I went to meet my sister. I searched my bag, my car, and my apartment multiple times. I even checked the recycling bin, with no success. So when I got to church, I asked Carol Z. and Sally M. For help. Carol led a prayer, and Sally said she would look for the glasses and ask around to see if anyone has spotted them. Sally is my sister’s roommate.
After church, Carol and I went to lunch, and not long after we sat down, I got a text from Sally that she had found my glasses. We all praised God.
This might seems like a small thing. I did have my glasses from last year that worked just fine, but it was a big thing to me. Carol could have laughed at me when I asked her to pray. She might have, just a little bit. But she called several people together and they prayed with me, and that prayer was answered.
We shouldn’t be ashamed to ask for prayer— in small things and big things. I prayed on my own, but it felt different when my church family joined me in that prayer. I felt comforted and loved. So let’s remember that, and share our prayers with each other, so we can lift each other up. This is another gift God has given to Friendly Street Church.

Events Highlights

Small Group: Weekly on Wednesdays at 10 am: At the Church Library. All I wanted to do was go back to bed and hide my head under the covers. But I sat at my computer and I did some journaling. Looking back at what I wrote, I then see, “And then I saw a squirrel walk across my patio. And he had cute little squirrel ears.” That made me smile and suddenly, I felt better.
When I am in a bad mood, I sometimes find myself wallowing in it. I want to be grumpy, or I want to be sad. Sometimes, I want to be angry at the world. I don’t think that’s entirely a bad thing. God created us with a whole range of emotions, and sometimes we need to give ourselves space to experience those emotions.
But what tends to happen is that I want to stop feeling grumpy, or sad, or angry, and I can’t make that shift on my own. This only seems to happen with negative emotions for some reason. Maybe because I never want to stop feeling cheerful or happy. That would be really weird.
The longer I am stuck in that negative emotional loop, the harder it gets to break out of it. And then something happens, like seeing the squirrel yesterday. And suddenly I’m able to regulate my emotions again. And it’s such a relief when that happens.
I don’t think that squirrel crossed my patio by chance. I believe God sent that squirrel to help me out of the sad mood I was stuck in. God does that a lot, I think. Someone will call me just at the right time, or I’ll get an email with a praise after a prayer request. Sometimes, I get the urge to call or text a friend, and they tell me, “I’m so glad you reached out! I needed that today.”
It goes both ways. So I should be listening for those nudges. I feel really awkward doing things like that, but that’s how I know it’s God, not me.
I know I’m not alone in feeling negative at times. It happens to all of us, at some point. Even King David had moments of feeling lost and alone.
Take Psalm 22, for example. David starts off in verse one with, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?”
That’s definitely not a happy start. But by verse 26, his attitude has shifted. “The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him—may your hearts live forever!”
David started off whining and complaining, and by the end of the Psalm, he was rejoicing and praising God. God isn’t afraid of our grumbling. He is not intimidated when we question him. He wants us to turn to him, even when we’re angry and accusing Him of causing our problems.
David turned to God, and because he did so, God was able to comfort him. David found peace in his relationship with God, even though his problems hadn’t been miraculously solved.
So, I guess that squirrel is really a reminder that I should turn to God, no matter how negative I’m feeling.
~susan~

It has been an unexpectedly hectic day for me, creating numerous detailed reports and responding to email requests for explanations of documents and such. I’m also still working out how things should work with the new app and our website.
It makes it challenging to sit down and be calm. I tend to keep pushing myself to just get it all done. That doesn’t work out well for me.
Yesterday was our July Dinner on the Deck. I wanted to bring something special, so I decided to bake an apple pie. And then I was busy on Monday, and didn’t get it made, and I was really busy on Tuesday, too, and got distracted. So Tuesday afternoon, I put the pie in the oven with just enough time for it to bake before I had to leave.
I thought to myself, I should not be trying to do this. I don’t have enough time. But as usual, I pushed myself to do it. I didn’t want to show up to dinner with empty hands.
If you know me, you probably know where this is headed. I pulled the pie out, put it on a metal tray since it was still HOT! And wrapped it in tin foil and kitchen towels so I could carry it without burning myself.
I got about fifteen feet from my door, and the wind blew the foil off. I tried to grab it, and the pie I’d worked so hard to make shattered on the sidewalk, in a mess of hot apple filling pie plate shards.
I couldn’t even clean it up properly, because it was too hot to handle. So I scraped up as much as I could using the tray and larger pie plate pieces.
So I arrived at the dinner with nothing but the pie server, which I’d tucked in my purse.
And it was fine. No one was upset or angry with me. There was plenty of dessert to share, and everyone still loved me. The ladies were sympathetic, though I did get teased a little. It was all in good fun.
But it’s also a reminder for me to set more realistic goals for myself. I knew I was too busy and too tired to be making that pie, but I tried to do it anyway. And then I was in a rush, and it all went to waste anyway. I could just as easily have left a little early and picked up something quick from the grocery store on the way to the dinner.
So tonight, I ask myself the serious question, “Why?”
On Monday, I was stressing about the website, I told myself, “This is God’s website.”
That changed my perspective. Friendly Street is God’s church. Our website is His website. Our App is His App. And that apple pie was God’s apple pie.
When I think of it that way, I can relax and leave it all in God’s hands. The reason I was stressing was because I was focused on myself, not on God.
Colossians 3:2 says, “So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” (MSG)
I like that translation or interpretation of that verse. Going forward, I will do my best, with the Lord’s help, to look at everything from His perspective. Perhaps if I think of those reports as His reports, I’ll feel more motivated to complete them.
As I said to my supervisor earlier today after making my third mistake on one report, “Thank you for being patient with me.” I am praying those same words to the Lord right now.
And the next time I bake an apple pie for the Lord, I’ll make sure to allow plenty of time for it to cool.
~susan~

UPDATE: The webiste is now working, with a proper security cerficate. Praise the Lord!

That is difficult for me to understand, because I know I’m just as much of a sinner as anyone else on the planet. And I know that my sins aren’t always obvious. And I’ve known terrible people who have also done good things.

But the idea that these people are insecure. That makes a lot of sense to me. It’s very difficult to wrap my head around the idea that a perfect God loves me enough to die, so that I don’t have to be punished for all the stupid petty stuff I do. So I can better empathize with them.

Which doesn’t exactly help when talking to people who have been hurt by hypocrisy in the church. Except for this. We can’t undo the hurt others have done by words and arguments. We can help heal the hurts with our actions and our attitudes.

I can’t argue someone into sharing my faith. But I can listen, and empathize, and perhaps give them a different perspective of what faith should look like.

John 8:10-11 says, “Then Jesus stood up and asked her, “Dear lady, where are your accusers? Hasn’t anyone condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she replied.
Then Jesus said, “I don’t condemn you, either. Go home, and from now on don’t sin anymore.” (ISV)

True believers should be like Jesus (aside from writing people’s sin in the dirt), and not like the accusers. We shouldn’t point out someone else’s sins, knowing we are sinners, too. Instead, we should not condemn our fellow sinners, but speak to them with love. And this includes the hypocrites.
~susan~
