Thought of the Week

Sometimes, I feel like the log in this photo, caught in the water with no way to escape it. Sometimes, it feels like I am caught in the floodwaters of life, and it’s all I can do just to stay afloat. But the truth is, I took that photo from a footbridge over the Willamette River, and that log is held securely in place by the supports of that bridge. It’s not going anywhere. But that can’t be seen in the photo I took.
Many times, when I am feeling most overwhelmed, it’s because my perspective is skewed. I’m looking at things from the wrong perspective. I get so focused on what’s in front of me that I can’t see the bigger picture. When I am very busy at work, for example, I look at the pile of files I have to go through, and I think, “I’m never going to get this done.” So I drag my feet, and it takes me twice as long because I spend too much time thinking and not enough time working. But I convince myself that I have to stay in my chair, staring at my work. “I can’t take a break until I’m done,” I tell myself.
But when I do force myself to take a break, and I go out for a quick walk, I come back to find that my to-do pile is not so overwhelming after all. Taking a little time away allows my brain to relax, and I am able to break down that impossible task into small steps that I can manage. And it also gives me time to realize that I am only human, and I can only get so much done in a day. Anything that doesn’t get done can wait until tomorrow. It won’t be the end of the world.
As a Christian, prayer can be a refreshing break, too. Prayer shouldn’t be just reciting a string of words I’ve memorized. It’s a time to quiet my thoughts. It’s a time when I can look up, and see the strong support that’s always there for me, and let my worries and stress flow around me like that water around that log. Prayer is a time to thank God. It’s a time to praise God. And sometimes, it’s a time to cry and rage and plead with God. Prayer is a time when I can let go. I can let myself be angry or afraid or sad . . . Or all three at once. God understands, and He’ll listen, for as long as I care to talk to Him. And that’s something only God can do.
Sometimes, being a log floating in a river can be scary. But it can also be very soothing. It’s all in the perspective.
Jeremiah 29:12-14 says, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity, I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” (NIV)
